Collect for the Third Sunday of Easter

O God, whose blessed Son did manifest himself to his disciples in the breaking of bread: Open, we pray thee, the eyes of our faith, that we may behold him in all his redeeming work; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

This Week at the Advent, May 5-11, 2019

Welcome to the Church of the Advent! If you are new to the area, visiting, or seeking a church home, we are glad you’re here and hope to have a chance to greet you in person.

Child care is offered during the 9 am and 11:15 am services; an usher can guide you to the nursery.

Welcome cards are located in each pew; please fill one out so we can keep in touch.

The flowers on the High Altar this morning are given to the Glory of God and in loving memory of Pearl Pfeffer.

9:00 Coffee Hour: Matt McNeff & David Russo join with John Boyd to host this morning. Next Sunday Robb Scholten and Nola Sheffer host. New coffee hour hosts are always needed, and many slots are available for the fall. Please contact Barbara Boles by phone, 617-501-7572, or email bbolesster@gmail.com if you’re interested or have questions about what is entailed.

11:15 Coffee Hour: Today’s hosts are Maggie Eggert, Nick Westberg, Fr Jay & Betsy James. We are always in need of more volunteers. To view the schedule of available dates and select a date to co-host, please go to http://theadventboston.org/1115-coffee-hour-signup/.  If you have any questions, please contact Roxy Hanson (roxenewu@yahoo.com), Frederick Ou (frederick.ou@gmail.com), or Kyle Pilares (kpilares.uk@gmail.com).

The Walk for Hunger is Today! Team Advent thanks all those who have supported the walkers, both financially and in spirit. Some of them are off to walk all 20 miles, so please keep them in your prayers today! As of Friday, Team Advent was within $4,000 of its goal of $10,000 and donations are always welcome. If you like to contribute, use the link at www.theadventboston.org to donate! Many thanks!

There is no Entr’acte today; it will resume next Sunday with the second part of a look at the parables found in Mark’s Gospel, led by Rick Stone. Note also that on May 19, Senior Warden Tom Brown will offer a presentation on the renovation of the rectory.

THIS WEEK

ADULT CONFIRMATION CLASSES continue this Wednesday following the 6:00 pm Healing Mass. This week’s topic is “The Bible and Anglicans.”

These classes are not limited to those seeking Confirmation. They are intended for those who have been confirmed in other communions and wish to be “received” into this Communion, and for those who would simply like to review some basic knowledge and information about The Episcopal Church. The Confirmation will be held Saturday, June 15 at 10:30 am at the Cathedral of St. Paul.

COMING UP

ODDS & ENDS

The flowers that adorn the Church are funded entirely by donations from members and friends of the Parish. There are openings for flower memorials or thanksgivings on Sundays, May 19 and 26, as well as for Ascension Day, May 30 (with flowers to remain through Sunday, June 2). If you are interested, please contact the parish administrator (office@theadventboston.org).

From the Advent Archives —

An occasional offering of little known facts, amusing anecdotes, and miscellaneous wisdom, in honor of the 175th anniversary of this parish.

from the “Rector’s Weekly Message,” the Rev’d William Harman Van Allen:

October 4, 1914: “It is good to greet you all once more in this familiar fashion, even though I write the message three thousand miles away, in a hospitable English garden. When you read it, I shall be a day nearer you, God willing; for I expect to sail October 3, on the Lusitania, due in New York, October 8. Pray for our safe passage.”

Photo of The LusitaniaJust seven months later—May 7, 1915—A German U-boat torpedoed the Lusitania 11 miles off the Southern coast of Ireland, sending her to the seabed in 18 minutes, resulting in the deaths of 1,198 passengers and crew.

May 23, 1915: “The offering for Belgian relief at the Lusitania Memorial Service, May 14, was $134.11.* So many demands have been made for the for the sermon preached at the Lusitania service, that I have written it out in full, and hope to have it printed in pamphlet form soon. Copies may then be had of the sexton; and I shall be glad of gifts towards the expense of publication.”

The sermon was printed and available just one week later.

*Adjusted for inflation, this amount would be $6,235.10 in 2019.
