If you are visiting or new to the Advent, we hope that you will feel welcome and at home.  Please fill out a visitor’s/newcomer’s card so that we will have a record of your visit here and can keep in touch.

All persons baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit are invited to the Altar to receive the Body and Blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  If you wish to receive a blessing, come to the Altar and cross your arms over your chest.

St Michael’s Conference for Young People completed its 57th session at the beginning of the month. A week-long Anglo-Catholic conference for High School and College students, its one-hundred members and thirty-some staff participate in classes, discussions, sports, recreational activities, (just plain fun!) and attend a High Mass and a Solemn Evensong each day. Mark Dwyer has been on the faculty for 25 years, and there are several alumni from the Advent! http://www.saintmichaelsconference.com/

Musical Notes: We welcome Katelyn Emerson, our new Associate Organist and Choirmaster! Katelyn begins her duties officially on September 1, but is with us for the next few Sundays as a “Prelude” as she becomes acclimated to her new duties and surroundings. Katelyn is a graduate of Oberlin, where she double majored in Music and French. She is the recent first prize winner in the American Guild of Organists National Competition. She is also familiar to many of us as our Oberlin Sacred Music Intern.

Ross Wood’s final Sunday will be August 28. As a “Postlude” we will have a gala celebration and farewell on Thursday, September 29, Michaelmas, following the 6:30 pm Solemn Mass. We will also celebrate Associate Organist Pro Tem Jonathan Ortloff at this time. Mark your calendars as we honor Ross’s 15 years of remarkable service to the parish!

Attention singers! The regular choir season will begin shortly, and the Advent is always looking for good avocational singers for our Parish Choir. This ensemble provides music for the 9:00 Sung Mass on a regular basis and for an occasional Choral Evensong service during the academic year. There is a regular Sunday warm-up rehearsal an hour before the Mass, plus three week night full choir rehearsals spread over the academic year. If you wish to join us to sing masterworks of the Renaissance and Anglican traditions, please contact Mark Dwyer or Katelyn Emerson after Mass, or email Mark Dwyer at dwyer@theadventboston.org for an informal audition. A love of choral music, a pleasant voice, some music-reading skills and the ability to make a regular commitment are the requirements.

Bible Study Continues – Wednesdays at 10 a.m. – Parish Library // Interested in studying the Bible with others from our parish? Join us in the Library on Wednesday mornings at 10 a.m. We are currently studying the Gospel of John.

Blessing of the Backpacks—September 11 at 9:00 am Mass. Church School at the Advent kicks off September 11! We start by Commissioning the Church School Teachers as a parish family at the 9 o’clock Mass, which is also the service for the seventh annual Blessing of the Backpacks. Students of all ages—from pre-school to grad school—come forward with their backpacks during the 9 o’clock Mass to be blessed by a priest. Don’t worry if you’re not old enough for a backpack yet—just bring a lunchbox, a pencil box, something you’ll carry to school with you every day. Parents are encouraged to bring their children so they may experience the support of the parish as they begin a new school year. After Mass, register for Church School downstairs in Moseley Hall. Why not join us and invite a family that doesn’t yet have a church home? Come out for refreshments, to meet the Church School staff, get a blessing for your backpack, and celebrate as a parish the beginning of another great school year!

Confirmation Classes Begin This Fall: The Advent offers confirmation classes every year for those who wish to be confirmed or received into the Anglican Communion. The next Confirmation services will be next spring, but we are planning classes for Wednesday nights beginning in November. Adults and teens who are interested should email frwood@theadventboston.org for more information. All are welcome to attend, even as a refresher course on Christian basics!

The Parish Flower Guild is taking a break during August, but there are openings for flower memorials or thanksgivings for Sundays, September 18 and 25. If you are interested, please call Blenda Jeffry at 978-443-3519 (email flowers.advent@gmail.com).

Discount Vouchers for the Boston Common Garage are available for $9.00 each from Nola Sheffer.  You can find her between the 9:00 and 11:15 Masses at the Coffee Hour or Entr’acte.  The vouchers can be used after 4:00 pm weekdays, and all day Saturday and Sunday.  Questions?  email:  nsheffer@newview.org.
