Prayer & Care Team sponsors Talk and Discussion on Alzheimer’s Disease—Saturday, June 25, 10:30 am-1 pm, Moseley Hall.  Barbara Moscowitz, LICSW, speaker.  Lunch provided.

All are invited to join members of the Advent’s Prayer & Care Team to learn about Alzheimer’s Disease.  Barbara Moscowitz, a geriatric social worker at Massachusetts General Hospital, will share information and insights gleaned from decades of work with patients, families, and caregivers coping with this disease.  Barbara’s talk will be followed by a light lunch and discussion.  Please RSVP to Deacon Noyes (dbnoyes@gmail.com) so that we can plan accordingly.

About our speaker:  Barbara Moscowitz received her Bachelor’s degree from Brandeis University and her Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW) from Boston College.  She has spent her entire professional career at Massachusetts General Hospital in the Departments of Social Services and Geriatric Medicine.  Beyond the clinical setting, Barbara is currently conducting research on a wellness curriculum in the frail outpatient population, and her goal is to explore interventions that will enable chronically ill individuals to remain in their homes.  She is the Director of MGH Senior HealthWISE, a community-based program that aims to enhance the health and well-being of older adults.

About Alzheimer’s Disease

  • It is estimated that as many as 5.1 million Americans may have Alzheimer’s disease.
  • It is estimated that one to four family members act as caregivers for each individual with Alzheimer’s disease.
  • The incidence of the disease is rising in line with the aging population.
  • Although Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging, the risk of developing the illness rises with advanced age. Current research from the National Institute on Aging indicates that the prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease doubles every five years beyond age 65.
  • As our population ages, the disease impacts a greater percentage of Americans. The number of people age 65 and older will more than double between 2010 and 2050 to 88.5 million or 20 percent of the population; likewise, those 85 and older will rise three-fold, to 19 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
  • It is estimated that about a half million Americans younger than age 65 have some form of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. (This is referred to as young onset or early onset.)

MISSION & OUTREACH CORNER

Volunteers needed for Advent Week at B-SAFE in Dorchester — Our parish would like to host a field trip and provide lunch for the kids and staff at the B-SAFE  (Bishops’ Summer Academic and Fun Enrichment) Program at the Epiphany School in Dorchester on August 1 – 4.  We need a big team of volunteers—Can you help?  To volunteer to work on this project, please contact Fr Wood (cubswn@gmail.com or 617.697.8528).  Time is already short, so if you’re able to help out, please be in touch as soon as you can!

COMING UP

Welcome the Bennetts back to Boston!  Next Sunday, June 26, we are pleased to have Ryan and Erin Bennett worshipping with us.  The Bennetts are in the U.S. for a brief break from their work as church planters in Paris with World Team, and the Advent has been supporting them financially and with our prayers.  Please say hello to them and their little boy, Elias.  They will be sharing about this work with members of the Mission Team in the Frisby Room between the masses, if you would like to listen in.

ODDS & ENDS

The flowers that adorn the Church are funded entirely by donations from members and friends of the Parish. There are openings for flower memorials or thanksgivings for Sundays, July 3, 17, and 24. If you are interested, please call Blenda Jeffry at 978-443-3519 or email flowers.advent@gmail.com.

Parish Work Days—Saturdays, August 6 & 13, 10 am to 2 pm—Mark your Calendars!  All parishioners are invited to come out for one of two Parish Work Days to help spruce up and do general maintenance on our beloved building and grounds.  It’s a great chance to meet and get to know others in our parish family by serving alongside each other.  No experience necessary!  Tools and supplies will be on hand, and we’ll share lunch afterward.  More details forthcoming; please let Fr Sammy or Deacon Daphne know if you are interested.

Discount Vouchers for the Boston Common Garage are available for $9.00 each from Nola Sheffer.  You can find her between the 9:00 and 11:15 Masses at the Coffee Hour or Entr’acte.  The vouchers can be used after 4:00 pm weekdays, and all day Saturday and Sunday.  Questions?  email:  nsheffer@newview.org.
